Spiciest Chips Ranked by Heat: The Chip Spice Ladder

Last checked 27 October 2026

A heat ranking in eleven rungs, from a gentle jalapeño kettle chip to the Carolina Reaper chip that was pulled from sale.

Chip makers don’t publish Scoville ratings for their chips, so we rank by evidence, in this order: (1) the hottest pepper the maker names on the pack or listing, using its published Scoville range; (2) the maker’s own heat claim; (3) only where those run out, our editorial estimate, marked [E]. Each rung shows its basis: [M] maker, [P] pepper SHU, [E] estimate. Pepper heat isn’t chip heat: dose matters, so treat neighbouring rungs as close calls. Where we quote Scoville heat units (SHU), they describe the pepper, not the finished chip, and come from the cited source. Disagree with the order? Good: tell us via the newsletter. Just want to order something hot? Our buying guide, spicy chips to buy online, lists seven picks with in-stock Amazon pages.

The Ladder

  1. 1. Cape Cod Sweet & Spicy Jalapeño

Kettle chips with jalapeño and a sweet touch.
Basis: jalapeño, 4,000–8,500 SHU as a pepper [P]; sweetness tempers it.

  2. 2. Chip’s Jalapeño (Barcel)

A straight jalapeño-and-salt potato chip, sold as “bold, spicy”.
Basis: jalapeño [P], no sweetener [M].

    Buy on Amazon →

  3. 3. Ruffles Flamin’ Hot

Ridged chips with Frito-Lay’s Flamin’ Hot seasoning. See our Flamin’ Hot history.
Basis: no named pepper or heat scale published; placement is an estimate [E].

    Buy on Amazon →

  4. 4. Pringles x Hot Ones Los Calientes Rojo

Built on the Los Calientes Rojo hot sauce, described as medium-spice.
Basis: jalapeño and habanero (100,000–350,000 SHU as a pepper) [M][P]; maker calls the sauce medium [M].

    Buy on Amazon →

  5. 5. Takis Fuego

Rolled tortilla chips with chilli pepper and lime.
Basis: rated “Extreme” on Takis’ Heat-O-Meter [M]; pepper not named, so position vs. habanero chips is an estimate [E].

    Buy on Amazon →

  6. 6. Takis Blue Heat

    The blue sibling of Fuego.
Basis: also “Extreme”; listing says it “battles for our hottest snack” [M]. Ranked just above Fuego on that claim [E].

    Buy on Amazon →

  7. 7. Route 11 Mama Zuma’s Revenge

Kettle chips from Route 11 Potato Chips (Mount Jackson, Virginia): habanero mash on their barbecue seasoning.
Basis: habanero powder in the ingredients; Route 11 says it aims to be “hot enough to satisfy most chileheads” [M][P].

    Buy on Amazon →

  8. 8. Lowcountry Kettle Carolina Reaper

Charleston-made kettle potato chips seasoned with Carolina Reaper.
Basis: Carolina Reaper pepper [M][P], but this is an eat-the-bag snack chip, so we place it below Paqui’s ghost-pepper chip [E].

    Buy on Amazon →

  9. 9. Paqui Haunted Ghost Pepper

Tortilla chips with ghost pepper, cayenne and chipotle.
Basis: ghost pepper (bhut jolokia), about 855,000–1,041,427 SHU as a pepper [P]; Paqui calls it the spiciest of its bag lineup [M].

  10. 10. Red Hot Reaper Chip Challenge

A single-chip challenge snack, sold in a box like the old One Chip Challenge.
Basis: Carolina Reaper and Trinidad Moruga Scorpion [M]; Scorpion averaged about 1,200,000 SHU in New Mexico State University’s Chile Pepper Institute 2012 tests; Reaper about 1,641,183 (Guinness) [P]. Not for children; one per person, as the maker warns.

    Buy on Amazon →

  11. 11. Paqui One Chip Challenge (discontinued)

A single chip made with Carolina Reaper (later versions added Scorpion or Naga Viper). Paqui pulled it in September 2023 after the death of a teenager who had eaten it, so there is no buy link. Don’t try to recreate it.
Basis: Carolina Reaper, Guinness-certified average of 1,641,183 SHU (2013) [P]; marketed by Paqui as the world’s hottest chip [M].

Ranking: World of Chips editorial, 27 October 2026. Pepper Scoville figures: Wikipedia (Jalapeño, Habanero, Bhut jolokia, Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Moruga Scorpion). Ingredients and heat claims: makers’ sites (rt11.com, Paqui) and each product’s Amazon listing.

FAQs

What is the spiciest chip ever sold?

The Paqui One Chip Challenge chip, made with Carolina Reaper (and later Naga Viper) peppers, was marketed as one of the hottest. Paqui withdrew it in September 2023 after a teenager died, so it is no longer sold.

Do spicy chips have a Scoville rating?

Makers don’t publish Scoville ratings for their chips. Scoville figures on this page describe the peppers used, such as the jalapeño or ghost pepper, not the finished chip.

What is the hottest chip you can still buy?

Of the chips here, the Red Hot Reaper Chip Challenge (Carolina Reaper and Trinidad Moruga Scorpion) is the hottest on pepper evidence; among regular bags, Paqui Haunted Ghost Pepper. Challenge chips carry real health warnings: keep them away from children.

Are Takis hotter than Flamin’ Hot chips?

Takis rates Fuego and Blue Heat as Extreme on its own Heat-O-Meter. Neither brand names its pepper or publishes a scale, so ranking Takis above Ruffles Flamin’ Hot is our editorial estimate, not a lab measurement.
