Origin & History
Frito-Lay filed a trademark for Flamin’ Hot in June 1990. From August 1990 it test-marketed spicy Lay’s, Cheetos, Fritos and Bakenets in Chicago, Detroit and Houston. Former Frito-Lay employee Richard Montañez says he invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, a story told in the 2023 film Flamin’ Hot. Frito-Lay told the LA Times it does not credit the creation to him, and credits a team managed by Lynne Greenfeld.
