Origin & History
In 1954, Joe “Spud” Murphy, owner of Ireland’s Tayto, developed a way to add cheese and onion seasoning during production, creating the first flavoured crisps. Walkers followed with its own Cheese and Onion, inspired by the ploughman’s lunch, and as of 2010 it was the brand’s most popular flavour. A 2024 Perspectus Global survey also put Walkers Cheese & Onion first among British crisp eaters.
