Potato Chips in South Korea

Asia

South Korea's potato chip market was built by two rivals. Nongshim opened it in July 1980 with Potato Chip, the country's first fresh-potato chip and the forerunner of today's Chip Potato. Orion followed in 1988 with Poca Chip, overtook Nongshim in 2000, and by 2014 the pair had long split the market, with Orion holding roughly 60% and Nongshim around 30%. Nongshim hit back in 2010 with Sumi Chip, made from domestic Sumi potatoes. Then came Honey Butter Chip. Launched by Haitai (working with Japan's Calbee) in August 2014 and made with acacia honey and gourmet butter, it spread through social media so fast that stores ran out, Haitai ran its factory around the clock, and bags were resold online at inflated prices. In October and November 2014 it topped overall snack sales at GS25, CU and 7-Eleven, ahead of Poca Chip and the much-loved shrimp cracker Saeukkang. Haitai eventually built a new factory to double output, while a wave of honey-flavoured copycats followed โ€” Nongshim's Sumi Chip Honey Mustard became one of the biggest. Most chips are bought at those convenience stores, and the sweet-salty balance that made Honey Butter famous still shapes new launches.
