Origin & History
Calbee introduced Potato Chips Nori-Shio in 1976 as its second-ever chip. In 2026, ahead of the flavour’s 50th anniversary, Calbee reworked the recipe after 171 test batches, switching its hidden umami note from scallop to bonito extract (see our news story). Norishio is one of Japan’s standard chip flavours, and Lay’s sells a nori seaweed flavour in Indonesia.
